History of the Singapore Walk to Emmaus Chapter
The Upper Room Walk to Emmaus Singapore Community comes under the umbrella of The Methodist Church of Singapore that comprises of 3 Conferences, they are:
- Trinity Annual Conference (TRAC), which governs the English speaking churches
- Chinese Annual Conference (CAC) , for the Chinese speaking churches, and
- Emmanuel Tamil Annual Conference (ETAC), for the Tamil churches.
In the eighties, Rev Dr Lorna Khoo as the editor of “The Methodist Message” first heard about the Upper Room Walk to Emmaus Ministry from international newspapers and articles. Wanting to find out more, she edged Rev Paul Nga and his wife Rev Mee Hee, who were then studying in the United States, to take the opportunity to attend an upcoming Walk there. They went through the Walk, were touched by their Emmaus experience and looked forward to pioneering the Walk to Emmaus program when they return to Singapore.
However, it was until the late nineties when Rev Dr Lorna Khoo went to England for
her studies that she had an opportunity to attend the Walk to Emmaus. She realised that this is something that will bless The Methodist Church in Singapore and upon her return to Singapore, she met up with the pastors and leaders of TRAC and CAC, convincing them to send a team to England to attend the Walk.
When the team returned from United Kingdom, they planned and pioneered our first Walk in Singapore in the year 2000 with the support from the UK Emmaus community. It was a combined men and ladies Walk conducted in English.
Since then, many have been blessed by the Emmaus movement. New leaders have risen, and we now have four Walks annually. 2 Walks in English, one each for the Men and Ladies, and similarly 2 Walks in Mandarin for the Men and Ladies.
Besides Singaporeans, we are privileged to have other nationalities from the region attending our Walks and blessing us with their friendship.
It is marvellous what the Lord has done over the past 18 years and the number of people He has impacted through the faithfulness of those who have worked with us, the people from England as well as the locals.
